Beto showing off the bedsheets his Mom made him. This was Beto’s room in the apartment.
The Morehead Apartment burns down. Beto was at school, Humberto at work, and Marcela had been taking a nap. She had just started treatments for hypertension, which caused her drowsiness. She always tried to rest while Beto was at school, so she would be rested when he came home. When she was waiting outside for Beto to arrive from school, she saw as the flames arose.
Marcela would receive Beto from the school bus on a different street, as the firefighters worked on the worst of the fire. A neighbor from a complex on that street would offer them to wait it out insider her apartment.
Many belongings are lost, notably a lot of home videos and pictures of Beto’s early years. The local Red Cross and neighbors quickly mobilized, overwhelming the family with furniture, clothes, money, and food. Marcela calls Mr. Novo, who had already heard of the fire, and because it was her, backed out of a contract with a tenant who had already put a deposit, and helped Marcela settle into a new apartment.
